Pest Advice
Dealing with Squirrels

Grey squirrels are incredibly destructive when they enter your home or business.  Grey squirrels can cause damage when they enter roof spaces or houses and buildings.

Barnard Pest Control get many call outs each year due to the damage

grey squirrels cause and the noise that comes with it.  We receive the

highest number of calls in the autumn when they are on the hunt for food.

Grey squirrels gnaw on ceilings and woodwork, they can strip insulation from electrical wires, tear up fibreglass insulation and can cause cold water tanks to become contaminated with urine and droppings.  They also cause a noise disturbance by scuttling around in your loft space.

How Do I Know I Have Squirrels In My Property?

1. Scratching and rustling sounds from your loft or a wall cavity

2. Droppings in the loft – although you might need a pest controller to identify these

3. Smell of urine in the loft area might indicate the infestation has been going on some time

4. Lots of other squirrels around your property, particularly near your roof or on high fences

5. Fruit and nuts stolen from bird feeders, or feeders being disturbed/knocked over

6. Bark being stripped from trees in your garden

7. Holes in vents or damage to your insulation foam

If you have any of the above signs that a squirrel could be in your property then it's time to call Barnard Pest Control.  It's essential that the necessary proofing is carried out to ensure there is no future access for the squirrels as well as catching the squirrels causing the issue.

How Can I Prevent Squirrels From Entering My Property?

We always tell our clients 'prevention is better than cure' and this is definitely the case for squirrels.  There is no point in eradicating the problem squirrels if you still have lots of access points for future ones to make their way in.  All gaps and holes should be blocked with tightly wedged mesh or metal plates, wherever possible.  We can help with this.  Tree branches hanging over the roof should be cut right back and items removed that are stacked against      the side of the building. Ensure all entry points are sealed.

How Do You Get Rid Of Squirrels?

It's essential to call a professional pest control company to deal with your squirrel problem.  We will carry out a series of 3 visits to lay traps and get rid of the problem squirrels.  We will also check entry points and make recommendations for proofing, which we can also carry out.
